OS/2 Warp & Achilles Internet

Configuring OS/2 Warp to access Achilles Internet

First things first:

This is a procedure to use OS/2 Warp version 3.0 with or without the WinOS/2 code (i.e. either the full or the Windows version) and most probably the "Warp connect" products as well, but I have not seen these yet. It is supposed to work with IBM's TCP/IP for OS/2 ver 2.0 that will run on OS/2 2.0, 2.1 and 2.11, but I have not tried it. (Let me know if you try it).

You should get a copy of the script mentioned in this document. It will permit you to connect to Achilles Internet services via SLIP using OS/2 Warp by following these procedures.

Once you have the file, you should copy it to your /TCPIP/BIN directory and follow the instructions below (which are included in the file).

I am also including a list of OS/2 related links to help anyone having trouble configuring their OS/2 system:

Configuring the dialer:

After having properly installed the IBM Internet Connection for OS/2 applications, open the "IBM Internet Connection for OS/2" folder and then the "Internet Utilities" folder located there. In that folder, you must run the "Dial Other Internet Provider" program.

Start by clicking on the "Add Entry" button to get a new configuration screen.

Page 1 (login info):

You must put a name for the entry, I simply put Achilles, but you can put something like "office", "home", "local" or "long dis" as you will see latter on why. You may want to uncheck the "Required" checkmark beside the "Password" field if you do not want to have to enter it every time you connect. The only other required field (and the most important) is the "Login Sequence" box.

In there, you must type "achilles.cmd 723-5519 userid password modeminit" (without the quotes). You may want to add "*70W" before the phone number to prevent the reception of other calls while you are connected (if you have call waiting) or you may want to add a "9," for an outside line connection when you are at the office, or "1-613-" for long distance, anyways, I think you get the idea. The "userid" and "password" are obviously your Achilles internet connection ones. Lastly, the "modeminit" is any additional initialisation that you want the modem to be sent before dialing, like "M0" to disable the modem speaker volume.

Page 2 (Connect Info):

Only two fields to fill out here and one button to press! So, click on the "VJ Compression" to enable the check mark there. Next, put "198.53.206.6" in the "Domain Nameserver" field and put "achilles.net" in the "Your Domain Name" field (again, both without quotes).

Page 3 (Server Info):

Here, you must fill pretty much every field, so I will give it to you in point form...

        News Server: news.achilles.net
        Gopher Server: gopher.achilles.net
        WWW Server: www.achilles.net
        Mail Gateway: mail.achilles.net
        POP Mail Server: mail.achilles.net
        Reply Domain: achilles.net
Reply (Mail) ID: (what ever your Achilles ID is)
POP Login ID: (what ever your Achilles ID is)
POP Password: (what ever your Achilles password is)

You can also simply omit the "achilles.net" part of each of the addresses above (except the "Reply Domain") because it is added by the TCP/IP software whenever a name with no period (.) is specified.

Page 4 (Modem Info):

The Modem page is pretty simple, all you need to put there is the COM port your modem is connected to and the baud rate of it. For a 14.4 modem, you should use 57600, but if that doesn't work (which is probably because you have an old serial card in your PC), you should use 38400. Data bits should be set to 8 and the Parity to NONE.

You will also notice that you can't set anything else on that page (it's all grayed out). The reason is that we are using a connection script, if you were to try connecting without using one, the dialer would permit you to set all these options, but you would not be able to connect to Achilles because the default script isn't compatible.
